I am considering picking up a barebones GMMK 3 Pro. In the images it appears that there is RGB built onto the PCB below each switch. Is this RGB expected to work in addition to RGB included on the RGB switches (if equipped)?
With issues I’ve experienced with my current Corsair RGB mechanical board, I am trying to stay away from PCB’s that have RGB and rely on only the RGB built into the switches. This way when they burn out, I can swap a switch opposed to replacing a PCB or entire keyboard.
Also, why can I not select a jet black metal bottom case? Does this mean its sold out? Trying to have it 100% metal in black.
RGB is on the PCB, and switches that are RGB compatible generally just means they have a design that allows the light to shine through them more cleanly and evenly.
Hotswap PCB will allow you to swap out / use whatever switches you want, for the most part.
If you like the feel of tactile switches, those are “okay and safe” for a budget. People would need to know your budget on switches for other recommendations but for maximum RGB, make sure you are looking at clear switches, North facing PCB and some type of shine through keycaps. South facing PCB will impact most shine through keycaps as the legend is more toward the north than south so the shine through isn’t as good. Just some other things to consider when looking at RGB compatibility.
This. We need to know what your preferences are. Do you prefer obvious tactile feedback? Heavier switches? Lighter? Do you prefer non-tactile linears? Silent switches? Clickies? Something in between? Does it need good RGB support? Or is this not as important?
There is a lot that goes into picking a switch, almost all entirely based on what your preference is.
@tecmo34 I’m not sure if I enjoy tactile, and to be honest I do not recall the driving force with me selecting Cherry MX Browns back in 2018… it may have been that they were on the quieter side and I was hoping to avoid pissing of my GF at the time. But the browns have treated me well, I am used to them, and feel like it’s a safe switch to go with. Maybe down the road I can try out different flavors of keys to see what I like. Thanks for the tip on the RGB.
@SentientTD I’m not sure TBH, as mentioned in my above response. I am a complete noob to keyboards and switches, all I can tell you is I am used to cherry MX browns and like them. There may be something I’d like better, but finding which is the challenge.
